Ya'lla - Fall 2004 Show
Laila teaches group belly dance
classes at the University of
Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Classes consist of a technique
session that focuses on learning
and mastering belly dance
techniques. This is followed by
the choreography section of the
class where students learn a
Middle Eastern dance
choreography by Laila.
As a student begins belly dance,
classes focus on basic Egyptian
cabaret (Raks Sharki) footwork,
hip isolations, chest isolations, lower body and upper body undulations,
shimmies and hand movements.
After these basic movements are mastered, classes move on to veil work,
moving with isolations, moving with shimmies and turning.
As students become more advanced, classes focus on layering (shimmying
while performing isolations), playing the finger cymbals and floor work. At
this point, other styles of Middle Eastern dance are introduced for the
students to compare and contrast with Raks Sharki.
